Singapore International Agri-Food Week 2022

The Singapore International Agri-Food Week (SIAW) returned for its second edition from 25 to 28 October 2022, providing a platform for industry leaders to exchange ideas and strategies toward building a vibrant agri-food ecosystem in Asia.

Hosted by Temasek, with support from the Economic Development Board, Enterprise Singapore, Singapore Tourism Board, and Singapore Food Agency, SIAW welcomed more than 6,000 attendees. Among them were world-leading agribusinesses, growers, food producers, consumer packaged goods and ingredient brands, entrepreneurs, investors, retailers and policymakers.

This year, SIAW was anchored by three key events: the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit, Agri-Food Tech Expo Asia 2022, and Roundtable on Novel Food Regulations. Held at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre at Marina Bay Sands, these events spotlighted the latest innovations in supply chain resilience, urban food systems, sustainable proteins, and affordable nutrition.

According to Park Sung Bae, Associate Director of the Agri-Food Investment team at Temasek and member of the event’s steering committee, this year’s SIAW saw “record turnouts”. He said, “We're seeing a lot of companies, startups, investors, government agencies, as well as research institutes from all over the world, not just in Asia. One of the key themes for SIAW is food security and sustainability, and this was discussed during the gala dinner, which really set the tone for the rest of the week.”

SINGAPORE’S COMMITMENT TO FOOD SECURITY

The gala dinner was held on SIAW’s second day at the Gardens by the Bay’s elegant Flower Field Hall, and it was then that Singapore reiterated its commitment to tackling the issue of food security.

Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies Heng Swee Kiat, who was the Guest of Honour, said in his speech that an additional S$165 million will be invested in the Singapore Food Story R&D Programme. This step-up in investment supports Singapore’s 30 by 30 goal — to produce 30 per cent of the country’s nutritional needs locally by 2030 — and expresses Singapore’s belief in the value of the agri-food industry.

As guests tucked into a sustainably sourced dinner of plant-based proteins and local produce, Beth Bechdol, Deputy Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, delivered a keynote about the main drivers of food crises, and the need for agriculture to be a prominent part of global emergency and humanitarian support.

In another keynote, Sunny Verghese, Executive Director, Co-Founder and CEO of Olam Group, dived into why sustainable food systems are crucial for food resilience.

A PLATFORM TO SHARE IDEAS AND FORGE PARTNERSHIPS

Another highlight of SIAW 2022 was the fifth edition of the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit. Over 1,100 delegates and 240 speakers from 37 countries gathered in Singapore and online for three days of high-level discussion, networking and deal-making, with the goal of scaling sustainable food production in the region.

The Summit, which spanned 41 panel sessions and presentations, 13 breakouts, and nine virtual roundtables, gave delegates a meaningful opportunity to share knowledge and create strong business connections.

Notable speakers included Grace Fu, Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment; Dechen Tsering, Regional Director and Representative for Asia and the Pacific of the United Nations Environment Programme; and global leaders from The Coca-Cola Company, Nurasa, Olam Agri, and more. They discussed critical topics ranging from food security to alternative proteins and aquaculture.

In fact, Nancy Quan, Senior Vice President and Chief Technical and Innovation Officer at The Coca-Cola Company, commended Singapore’s dedication to advancing the agri-food industry. “I saw the connection of the investment from the Singapore government on research and development and innovation to enable some of the new technologies. It is great to see that the regulatory environment in Singapore can keep pace with the technology,” said Quan.

SHOWCASING INNOVATIVE AGRI-FOOD SOLUTIONS

Beyond the inspiring conversations, delegates also got a hands-on experience with the latest innovations at the inaugural Agri-Food Tech Expo Asia. The trade fair was the first focused exhibition platform for emerging and established industry players in the region's agri-food industries to launch, showcase and testbed their solutions.

With 163 exhibiting companies and nine official National Pavilions, the tradeshow included a Living Lab showcase, sandboxes, and one-on-one business matching – for participants to connect, discover and showcase innovative and practical agri-food solutions.

The event was particularly memorable for Arik Kaufman, Founder and CEO of Steakholder Foods, who visited Singapore for the first time to exhibit his company’s 3D bioprinting cultured meat capabilities. “This event is amazing. We were overwhelmed by the innovation, the types of start-ups, investors, and people that were around. The energy is very collaborative and open — competitors are talking about ways to work together, while stakeholders are potentially interested in investing and joining our revolution,” said Kaufman. “We see Singapore as a springboard to enhance our activities worldwide.”

It takes a global village to make sure our food supplies are kept safe and open to everyone, and SIAW is on its way to helping bring like-minded decision-makers together to make this a reality.
